Every epoch possesses its proper Plato, its proper Thomas and its proper Kant. To interpret or to assimilate a doctrine does not merely consist in the knowledge of that which the author has literally taught but rather in representing to oneself one's own impression while reading. The new literature which has appeared since 1950 will in the future behave just like the preceding: the attempt will be made to re-think the authentic Criticism as well as to complete Kant's intellectual (...) portrait by carving out certain aspects of his thought which are little or not yet known. The study shows that Plato's critique of democracy remains as firm in the Laws as it was in the Republic and the Statesman, refusing to concede any room to any form of popular sovereignty that could threaten the government of knowledge.

Dans ce texte, j’analyse l’échange entre Socrate et Calliclès pour défendre la thèse selon laquelle Socrate ne réussit qu’à réfuter les paroles de Calliclès. À la fin de la joute dialectique, Socrate finit par aider Calliclès à renforcer sa position en lui montrant pourquoi il doit rejeter l’hédonisme. Pour établir cette thèse, j’analyse en premier lieu le premier discours de Calliclès (Gorg. 482c-486a). En second lieu, j’examine certains éléments formels de l’ἔλεγχος socratique pour rendre compte de la stratégie argumentative de (...) Socrate. En troisième lieu, j’examine l’échange au sujet de la tempérance et de l’hédonisme. Enfin, je termine mon texte en suggérant pourquoi Platon fait cette mise en scène. -/- In this article, I analyse the debate between Socrates and Callicles to argue that Socrates only succeeds in refuting Callicles’ words,. In the end, Socrates helps Callicles solidify his position by showing him why he must reject hedonism. To make this claim, I first analyse Callicles’ great speech (Gorg. 482c- 486a). Second, I examine certain formal elements of the Socratic elenchus to make sense of Socrates’ argumentative strategy. Third, I examine the debate about temperance and hedonism. Asumiendo la primera como el juego de la diversidad de los seres, el intercambio de palabras en un combate sin vencedor. Lo propio del agón y del pólemos, se muestra por una parte cómo la filosofía en su comienzo platónico instituye su ideal del Sentido. Del Bien, (...) de la Verdad, precisamente en oposición a la agitación democrática; pero, por otra, se destaca el pensamiento crítico kantiano como un momento de apertura a la relación plural de los seres, Poseer, desde su comienzo como mitología, la fuerza crítica de este pensamiento es lo que permite a la literatura alcanzar las huellas de la democracia. En rupture avec la philosophie contemporaine, Levinas est conduit, dans sa quête du sens, à revenir à un certain platonisme. Sa métaphysique du « rapport à l'Autre » pourrait être considérée comme se fondant sur le Sophiste de Platon, au prix d'une critique de l'ontologie de Heidegger. Levinas privilégie le couple Même-Autre au détriment du couple Mouvement-Repos. Alors que Heidegger insiste sur l'élément, Levinas met en avant l'Autre, la Parole, l'Infini. Breaking up with contemporary philosophy, Levinas, in his quest for (...) meaning, is led to return to some kind of platonism. His metaphysics of the « relationship to the other » may be understood as resting on Plato's Sophist et the cost of a criticism of Heidegger's ontology. Levinas priviledges the couple « the same / the other » to the détriment of the couple « movement/rest ». QUINE'S DOCTRINE of the indeterminacy of translation is made possible by the principle of substitution characteristic of extensional logic. The same characteristic makes it impossible, in philosophy of science, to choose among theoretical models no one of which is obviously best suited to explain the facts. Hilary Putnam achieved a sort of closure to the problem of reference in philosophy of science, when he pointed out the implications of the Skolem-Löwenheim theorem. He said that besides the facts a theory is (...) designed to explain, there are any number of unintended interpretations of the same theory that assign the correct truth values to all sentences of the theory. There can be no sound basis for deciding upon the sole interpretation for a theory. Following Putnam, some philosophers have abandoned the problem of reference in the context of axiomatic systems. Ian Hacking, for instance, prefers a notion of reference "that is not tied by any specific, binding theory about what is referred to." He has turned to the study of approximations and practical models, spurred on by the difficulty of reconciling axiomatic systems to scientific practice. (shrink)

Pervasive throughout the life sciences, the concept of function has the air of an epistemological scandal: ascribing a function to a biological structure or process amounts to suggesting that it is explained by its effects. This book confronts the debates on function with the use of the notion in a wide range of disciplines, such as biology, psychology, (...) and medicine. Norris, McQueen & Cutler present a detailed account of the decision stage of the phoneme monitoring task. However, we question whether this contributes to our understanding of the speech recognition process itself, and we fail to see why phonotactic knowledge is playing a role in phoneme recognition.

In this paper we will be discussing the “Platonism” of two former Göttingen students of Husserl, notably Jean Héring and Roman Ingarden. By “Platonism” we mean not simply an account of the diff erence between individuals and Forms. We mean a peculiar insight into what Ingarden explicitly designates as “the content of Ideas”. Our primary concern is to emphasize a major shift in Plato’s treatment of Forms: we will see Plato switching the focus of his investigation from (...) the difference between the visible world of bodies and the invisible realm of Forms to the internal structure of the Forms themselves. We will then discuss Héring’s Bemerkungen über das Wesen, die Wesenheit und die Idee and Ingarden’s Essentiale Fragen in order to explain the diff erence between the notions of individual essence, morphe, essentiality and Idea.
